2013 Spring Break Fishing Trip

By Darr Colburn

Well it is that time a year again when the temperatures are warming up here in Phoenix.  The desert is very green and beautiful because of all the rain we have had.  My boys Parker and Paul have spring break this week so it was time to make our first fishing trip of the year.  We have gone on a fishing trip the past 4 years on spring break.  My dad always took me fishing on my spring break when I was growing up and those trips produced some great memories.  I love keeping family traditions going so we decided to head over to Roosevelt Lake for a couple of days.  We stopped in at The Tackle Box in Tonto Basin for some minnows and a current fishing report.  We were on the lake by 7:30am and headed to the north end to try for some crappie.  We trolled around with the other boats for a couple of hours and did not do any good.  We only saw a couple of crappie caught so we moved down the lake to try for some bass.  We fished for bass the rest of the day and caught a few but the fishing was a little slow.  The boys took turns driving the boat to different spots and we just enjoyed being out on the water.  We pulled off the lake just before dark and grabbed a burger at the Butcher's Hook restaurant for dinner.  The next morning we were on the lake at 7am and started trolling again for crappie.  Parker hit the first crappie of the day just after we started fishing.  Parker had the right setup going, landing 3 fish before Paul and I hooked anything.  We trolled around for a couple of hours and picked up a few crappie and bass.  Mid morning we moved out to some main lake points and fished for bass before heading home in the afternoon.  The boys and I had a great time on the lake and I look forward to many more trips together.
