My hunter, Jim Fitzgerald, arrowed this nice bull on video.  He scores right at 354.  Lots of pics and video to come soon!  Gotta love being in Arizona during the elk rut!

 

 

Arizona Elk Hunting Unit 9 Update 9.17.12

The first four days of the hunt are in the hopper with no bulls hitting the ground yet for Colburn and Scott Outfitters.  The rut seems to be getting more and more intense each day.  The forecast looks likes much of the same steady weather.  Temps are in the high 30's at night and high 70;s during the day.  My cousin Jimmy helped a great hunter named Matt who is 13 years old harvest his first bull elk.  More pics and video to come soon.  Looking forward to another 10 days of great Arizona elk action.

Arizona Elk Hunting Update 9.14.12

Opening morning has come and gone with much anticipation.  We had some Arizona bulls bugling pretty decent this morning.  Got on a few bulls but nothing special yet.  Looking forward to spending another two weeks doing what we love!  Weather is supposed to stabilize and no rain in forecast for 10 days.  With things drying out the elk should get back to thinking about water. 

Arizona Elk Hunting Unit 9 Update 9.12.12

We got a bunch of rain yesterday and last night here in Unit 9.  The 10 day forecast is for it to dry out with highs in the mid 70's and lows in the high 30's.  Should be great weather for the first week of the Arizona archery elk hunt.  Scouting continues to go well with lots of bull sightings in the 300-350 range.  Bugling has been steady but not crazy yet which is good with me.  I think they are going to come uncorked pretty soon.  Hunters are starting to show up steadily.  Hoping all elk hunters have good fortune this season!  Pictures below are of two different young bulls.  Good to see the next generation getting in on the action.

More Pics of Casey Brooks 446 Arizona Monster Elk

I just got off of the phone with Casey and we were going over the numbers of his giant Arizona archery bull elk.  Here are the measurements: Left-19.2, 20.3, 20.4, 21.6, 16, 53.1, 8.6, 8.4, 8.4, 6.1=182 7/8 and the Right- 20.5, 18.1, 21.4, 22.3, 15.5, 55.2, 8.6, 8.1, 8, 6.3=184 6/8 and the inside spread of 43 5/8 for a whopping total of 411 2/8 gross typical frame.  Then add the abnormals Left-18.7, 1, 3=22 7/8 and Right-11 5/8, 1=12 5/8 for a total of 35 4/8 inches of abnormals.  So the total gross score is 446 6/8.  If you deduct the symmetry of 8 7/8 of deductions the bull should Net score somewhere in the 437 7/8 neighborhood.  This would easily place this bull as the NEW #2 in Pope and Young.  Congrats to Casey.  The following photos are exclusive photos from Casey for JayScottOutdoors.com.  Casey's three biggest archery bulls are 446, 440, and 439. Arizona Elk Hunting Unit 9 Report 9.11.12

As I write this post it can't be over 60 degrees with on and off light drizzle of rain.  The weather appears to be setting up perfect for this hunt.  We have been continuing to have great days in the field scouting for the archery elk hunt.  We even were able to help friend Alex Rimsza harvest his first antelope.  The elk rut seems to just be steady with not too much craziness yet.  I keep hoping they won't go nuts until the season starts.  Lets hope that points stay together through the season.  I expect the bugling will increase daily.  I haven't seen any actual breeding yet.  I expect to see it within the next week and on into the month of September.  Once again our God does not disappoint with his awesome sunrises and sunsets over Unit 9.  Enjoy the pics!

Casey Brooks 446" Giant Arizona Archery Elk

Well, my friend Casey called this morning and told me about his 59th bull with a bow and arrow.  This bull scores a whoping 446 4/8 inches gross green.  Casey has firmly cemented his position as the most successful trophy elk hunter in the world.  No one has killed more big 400 inch bulls than him.  More pics to come soon!

Steve Bright's 90+ inch Arizona Antelope

Our good friends, Danny and Steve Bright struck Arizona gold this season with a 90+ inch Antelope in Arizona Unit 9.  Danny and Steve have been good friends with Darr and I for over 15 years.  These two brothers are salt of the earth and two of the nicest guys you will ever meet.  Going off of a tip from friend Jay Elmer, the Bright brothers were able to capitalize on this great Arizona antelope tag.  Steve made a great 300 yard shot with his faithful brother by his side.  The Bright's were assisted by friends and family, Kenny Bright and Steve Ash.  More pics to come soon!

Arizona Elk Hunting Unit 9 Report 9.06.12

It has not rained today which is a first in 8 days since we have been here.  The forecast for the next 10 days calls for 20-40% chance of rain.  The archery hunt starts a week from tomorrow.  Bulls seem to be getting more engaged each day with more and more bugling activity.  It is hard to beat Arizona elk hunting for sure.  Excitement for the upcoming season is increasing each day.  The thought of a 14 day archery season with a good moon makes me smile.  Darr and I are in Unit 9 and Janis is scouting in Unit 10.  I would say the antler growth is maybe just below average for unit 9.  Seems like the backs are a little weaker than usual.  Still should be a great season trying to find a big bull!

 

Arizona Elk Hunting Unit 9 Update 9.05

The elk rut is steadily improving here in Unit 9.  The small bulls are getting their turn at pushing the cows and most of the bigger bulls are by themselves.  Janis, Darr and I have been having lots of fun and enjoying one of God's greatest creations.  Should be another good scouting morning.

Arizona Elk Hunting Unit 9 Update 9.3.12

The weather is awesome in Unit 9!  The smaller bulls are pushing cows around and acting tough.  The big bulls have been a little elusive so far but I am sure they are just waiting for the rut to progress.  We have had some fantastic sunrises and sunsets.  Looking forward to the rest of the month in elk paradise!
