2009 NBA All Star Weekend

Jeanne and I went to the NBA allstar weekend and it was a great show. The slam dunk contest was pretty good and we saw some amazing dunks. The game on Sunday was a shootout in which the West proved too strong for the East. Amare and Shaq played well. Shaq's pregame introduction was hilarious.

Mexico Buck

I have measured my buck and it is my biggest buck that I have ever shot. I am by no means an official scorer but here are my preliminary measurements-

Left side: G1 3 6/8, G2 81/8, G3 7 7/8, H1 3 4/8, H2 3 4/8, H3 4, H4 3 1/8, MB 17 5/8

This is what I saw when I approached

If my math is correct my buck green scores 130 and some change. He is my favorite trophy of any that I have taken. My hunting partner, Darr Colburn and I were invited by our friend Randy Ulmer to hunt a ranch south of Santa Ana, Mexico. Randy and his nephew Zach, turned me on to this buck and I was able to harvest him. I hunted a total of about 11 days and this was the only buck I glassed up over 100 inches. The temperature was very hot and conditions were extremely tough for Coues deer movement. I glassed this buck up on Tuesday morning bedded at about 2.5 miles away. I quickly put the 40X's on him only to watch him get up and walk directly away out of my view. I moved positions and never relocated him until Thursday morning. I had made the decision that I would be sitting on a small rock point above where I had spotted the deer on Tuesday. I figured this would put me in shooting position if the buck were to retrace his steps. Well as it turned out, thanks to the Lord, as light appeared that morning I glassed him bedded very near the same position he was bedded on Tuesday. He was 440 yards out facing away from me. Three shots later and some shaky nerves he was down. I had hit him on the first shot and he stood up behind a bush. I shot thru the bush with no connection and then he took two steps facing me. My third shot was true and the buck was down. Without the graciousness of Randy and Zach, I would have never even seen this deer. This trophy is as much theirs as it is mine. Lots of fun was had by all. Special Thanks to Randy and Zach for turning me on to a buck of a lifetime!!

Kenny Perry wins the FBR Open

Kenny Perry has been a guest at my parents house every year since I was about 14 years old during the Phoenix Open. We have watched him have many good finishes over the years but this year it was different. He won the tournament in a three hole playoff with Charley Hoffman. It was so exciting to see him finally conquer the TPC of Scottsdale. The week started off with an event that was alot of fun at the Celebrity Theatre. The night included Stan Utley, Betsy King, Kenny Perry and JB Holmes, all of whom are star golfers. They shared some insight to their golf game as well as their relationship with Jesus. Christian music star Paul Coleman did some great songs to get the crowd pumped up and then a great message from Dr. David Cook. David has written a great little book that I recommend to all. It is called "Golf's Sacred Journey". It can be viewed at http://www.linksofutopia.com/. Great job KP and I look forward to watching you have another great year. We topped the day off with a SuperBowl party after the golf tournament. Cards looked good but fell just short!!
