AZGFD Spring Hunts Recomendations

http://www.azgfd.gov/pdfs/h_f/huntingrecommendations/2011/2011springbiggamehuntrecfinal.pdf

It will be interesting to see what happens with the Spring Turkey Hunts.  I loved the idea of juniors over the counter hunts but I did not and do not like the fact that there is no mandatory reporting.  So in other words the game and fish has to guess how many birds are harvested.  I do think they should rotate over the counter units for juniors and give some units a break.

I do like that 3C and 23 will have a youth draw only season because they reached the 35% harvest objective.

In general, I think the azgfd is way too liberal on their permits and our birds are going to suffer and that is unfortunate.

......and that is all I have to say about that.............

Monsoon Rain in Elk Country

Check this out!  I have been checking on the moisture around the state and this gauge had 1.2 inches at about 7pm and now it has 3.27 inches!!!!  This is the kind of rain we have been looking for!  It is wild because Young, AZ only has had .27 inches during the same time.

Fishin' on the Fork

We had a great time yesterday fishing the Roaring Fork with Janis.  We had several doubles and had some great dry fly action.  Watch in HD!

There were two golden eagles that looked like they had some fishing plans also!

Training for Elk Season

Jeanne and I got to watch Janis in action as he trains for the upcoming elk season.  He ran a 14.75 mile trail marathon that gained over 4000 feet of elevation in the first 10 miles.  It was cool to see all of the hardcore trail runners that are in a league of their own when it comes to fitness.  Great job to all who participated!!

The following Wilderness Athlete products below were used by Janis on race day.

Check out the video of this grueling race!  Watch in HD!
My hats off to Janis and all the athletes who took part in the race!

Hike to Booth Lake

We had a great hike yesterday up to Booth Lake.  The lake sits at about 11,400 feet and the hike was beautiful.  Lots of wildflowers in the meadows and the trail followed Booth Creek up to the lake.  It was 12 miles round trip with 3080 feet of elevation gain to the lake.  We saw some pretty cutthroat trout swimming in the lake looking for food.  The good Lord did a good job on the mountains here in Colorado!

Two Big Bulls

I have been emailed these photos by several different people and they are floating all over the net.  They are definitely a couple of nice bulls, What do they score?  I will throw my guesstimate up when I get back from fishing today.  It should be a fun exercise in mathematics!

UPDATE POST-
I wish I had some video of these bulls or some other angles to see the extent of all of the trash.  Here is my attempt at guessing what these bulls score.  My eyeballs have gone somewhat cross-eyed looking at the big trashy bull.  There is so much going on it could be photoshopped for all I know and could be in a farm for all I know but it is still fun to guess what the bone measures.
Trashy Bull (Guesstimate) 9 X 7
L-21,19,20,22,18,31 Mass,54 MB=185 plus 4 extra points 8 (G3), 15 (G4), 7 (G4), 6 (G5)=36+185=221
R-19,17,20,22,18,4,31 Mass,54 MB=185 plus 1 extra 8 (G4)=193
Inside Spread 42
185+185+42=412 mainframe with 44 extras=456 Gross (I am getting dizzy...did I add that right?)
I think I just burned a few brain cells.............

Clean Bull (Guesstimate)
L-18,18,14,19,14,30 Mass, 55 MB=168
R-18,18,14,20,16,30 Mass, 55 MB=171
Inside Spread 39
168+171+39=378 Gross

Who thinks I am in the ballpark????????????????

Night Crappie Fishing Trip

Parker, Paul, Ryan Eustice and I went to Bartlett on Friday night to try and catch some crappie. We got to the lake around 9pm and pulled out at about 6 am the next morning. The shad and crappie showed up around 2:30 am. We ended up catching 13 crappie and lost a few more. Ryan caught the biggest fish of the night that was just under 2lbs.
