Applying for the fall draw I never thought I would be writing this story now. I had decided that I was going to put in for a premier Arizona trophy Coues whitetail tag, thinking I would be waiting up to 10 years. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the words “draw success.

My tag started December 9^th and ended December 31^st. However, due to school I had to wait till the 15^th to begin hunting. Scouting was difficult because of a full school schedule so I scouted maybe three times before the hunt. I hunted a few days with my dad opening week and saw no big bucks.

A couple friends that had been wanting to come help me on the hunt were getting jammed up with work and other obligations. I headed back down on the 22^nd and 23^rd to hunt a few mores days before Christmas. I saw a few smaller bucks and one decent buck.

Now, I cannot tell you how many people had told me that the week after Christmas the big bucks begin to go crazy and start coming out of the wood work. Thursday the 29^th we woke up usual time (6:00am) and met with my other friends who drove down to help us with the remaining of the hunt. We started glassing and saw a few smaller bucks but nothing worth chasing. Just before we were going to call it and head in for lunch we glassed up a small buck feeding. We ran off to sneak in for my dad to get a shot at the buck when a bigger buck reveled himself. The moment had finally come, it was all starting to unfold. We were a good distance away from the buck and got all our optics on him. Taking one look through the spotter I knew he was the one. The buck bedded down under a mesquite tree, which triggered the beginning of our stalk. It only took us 10 minutes to get into position for the shot. The buck was chasing a doe 250 yards up the hill. My first shot I missed low and then at 275 yards he presented a perfect quartering away shot and down he went. My dad followed up, “He’s down”. All the way up to him millions of things were going through my mind. Making it up to the top I looked over and saw the buck pilled up at the base of a small juniper. I went over to him and pick up his rack and was in disbelief. All my hard work had paid off in the end.

I am very appreciative the have harvest such a beautiful trophy animal and to have shared it with my friends and my dad. He scores 93 7/8. My biggest to date. "

Why the GCE is the Last Best Place for Wolves in Arizona:
There is low road density and a good prey base

There are few opportunities for conflict with humans or livestock, because there isn’t too much of either. Plus, we even have a few wolf-friendly ranchers who have cattle around the potentially suitable habitat for wolves in the GCE (which means they are willing to practice good animal husbandry techniques and they recognize the value of wolves to the ecosystem)

Note: Defenders of Wildlife, one of the GCWRP member organizations, has The Bailey Wildlife Foundation to provide support for livestock owners to help PREVENT depredation. In addition, federal funding has been set up as a compensation program, operated by the US Fish and Wildlife Service to pay ranchers whenever there is a loss of livestock due to depredation by a wolf that was reintroduced.

Bringing the Wolf Back to Grand Canyon:

By the late 1920's wolves had been almost completely eliminated from the landscape of northern Arizona. With the arrival of Europeans to the Southwest in the seventeenth century, bringing with them cattle and sheep, most wildlife endured similar persecution. Elk and pronghorn antelope were slaughtered, at first for their meat and later to reduce competition with domestic stock. Stockmen killed virtually any creature, from prairie dog to bighorn sheep, thought to compete with domestic livestock. No group of animals suffered as much as did predators, and none so completely as the wolf.
This was particularly true in Arizona where the livestock industry and government hunters launched total war against the wolf in the 1890's. The exterminators did not understand and, therefore, gave no regard to the important role predators play in nature. Generally, little regard was given to nature at all. The complete extermination of the wolf in Arizona took 60 years and cost millions of taxpayers’ dollars. In the process, distinct subspecies were extirpated from the southwestern United States. Early wolf taxonomists (Young and Goldman 1944) identified two distinct subspecies in the GCE (C.l. mogollenensis and C.l. youngii); however, recent taxonomic revision (Nowak 1995) recognizes only one subspecies (C.l. nubilus), and current genetic research may show original occupation of much of GCE by the Mexican wolf (C.l. baileyii) as well. Regardless of which subspecies once dwelt throughout the GCE, it is certain that the region’s ecosystem suffers without the top predator.
Wolves at Grand Canyon were targeted for additional reasons. In 1906, Theodore Roosevelt signed into law a bill establishing the Grand Canyon Game Preserve on the Kaibab and Coconino plateaus. Lacking insights into the ecological role of predators, the government immediately hired hunters to protect "harmless" game animals, such as deer and bighorn sheep, from predators such as cougars and wolves. Between 1906 and 1923 government hunters and others reportedly killed hundreds of cougars and bobcats, thousands of coyotes, and many wolves. The slaughter of most of the mountain's predators, including every wolf, contributed to the explosive increase of deer on the Kaibab Plateau. The deer population peaked in 1924 somewhere between 30,000 and 100,000 animals. Overgrazing by deer and cattle, combined with a severe drought, brought disease and starvation. Thousands of deer perished. Incredibly, predator extermination continued.
Now we skip ahead to 1998. Under the Endangered Species Act, an “experimental, non-essential population” of Mexican wolves, bred in captivity, was introduced in the Blue Range of eastern Arizona. Not without difficulty or compromise, however. One compromise was the artificial boundary imposed on the wolves’ movement away from the reintroduction area. If a wolf adventures (as young males and females are biologically required to do to form their own packs) beyond the boundary, then they are captured and returned. One such wolf actually made it to Flagstaff in 2004 before being hit and killed as it crossed Hwy. 89 on the east side of town.
All hope is not lost. The Grand Canyon Ecoregion has been identified by wildlife ecologists as offering extraordinary habitat for wolf recovery. The region contains vast expanses of undeveloped land in national parks, monuments, and forests, and contains ample food for wolves. Scientific research* indicates that this region, extending from the Mogollon Rim all the way up to the high plateaus of southern Utah, can sustain at least 200 wolves
Who Are We?
Grand Canyon Wolf Recovery Project coordinates the efforts of our Coalition Partners throughout the Southwest, who have come together to help achieve the recovery of Mexican gray wolves in the Grand Canyon region. Wolves play a crucial role in sustaining and restoring the diversity of life in our nations wildlands.

The Grand Canyon Wolf Recovery Project advocates for the recovery of the Mexican gray wolf through education and public outreach. We participate in local and regional events and are often asked to give presentations on wolf related issues in classrooms throughout Northern Arizona. Educating the public and organizing local communities to participate in our work is crucial to our efforts in restoring the Mexican gray wolf to the Grand Canyon region. We effectively engage with public citizens and bring a strong messages to the government agencies charged with protecting wolves and maintaining sustainable habitat conditions for wolves and other wildlife.
The organizations involved with the coalition have a long history of success with predator issues. Coalition members, including Defenders of Wildlife, Sierra Club, and the Center for Biological Diversity were instrumental in returning the wolf to southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, through the Mexican Wolf Recovery Program. Many of the organizations are currently working together on the upcoming forest management plans to ensure that lowered road densities, recovery of other native species, and extirpation of non-native species, are a priority, creating safe havens and safe passages for wildlife and paving the way so that some day we may hear the sound of wolves howling across Arizona.

Current Programs and Activities:
The Grand Canyon Wolf Recovery Project (GCWRP) is dedicated to bringing back wolves and restoring ecological health to the Grand Canyon region. One key management strategy is to eliminate all restrictions to wolf dispersal and movements. Occupation of areas outside of the current Blue Range Wolf Recovery Area will be required in order to achieve full recovery of Mexican wolves. Communicating and engaging with Grand Canyon National Park personnel and surrounding land management agencies is essential to achieving successful and meaningful wolf recovery in the American southwest. At the same time, the GCWRP and coalition partners are working to cultivate a new constituency of citizen advocates for wolves in the Grand Canyon region.

Our strategies for wolf recovery in the Grand Canyon region consist of several key approaches:

1) Influence a change of management policies inhibiting wolf recovery in the Grand Canyon region. This includes encouraging the FWS to work quickly and concurrently on a new recovery plan and project rule for Mexican wolves, so that the policies prohibiting the natural dispersal of wolves in the Grand Canyon region are eliminated. Because officials in several counties in the Blue Range Wolf Recovery Area have come out in opposition to wolves, we will work to educate and influence local government officials in the Grand Canyon region and encourage them to demonstrate their support for wolf recovery.

2) Engage and influence the Grand Canyon National Park and other key land management agencies to support wolf recovery in the region. GCWRP activities include meetings with the Superintendent of Grand Canyon National Park, networking with key representatives of adjacent Forest Service lands, bringing land managers and scientists together for collaboration across political boundaries, and participating in land management processes that affect wolves.

3) Cultivate a constituency and build a base of support for the restoration of wolves to the Grand Canyon region. Primary activities are tabling at area events and at the Grand Canyon’s North and South Rims during the summer, giving presentations to schools and organizations, public art installations to raise awareness about wolves, and hosting outreach/education events in regional communities, including Flagstaff and Grand Canyon.

Colburn and Scott Outfitters had another great hunt in Sonora, Mexico for coues deer. We had the pleasure of taking father and son, Kit and Paul Critchlow. Each harvested nice bucks. Kit's scored right at 110 inches. The weather was very warm and made deer movement a little slower than usual. We tried to keep track of bucks from our trip and the count was well over 100. With the warmer temps and coming bright moon it seemd as though the bigger bucks were slow to move around. Darr captured both harvests on video and we will be posting soon. More to come.......

Brody and I headed out to find a cow on Sunday. We failed. We did see 9 bulls, about 100 mule deer with 2 shooter bucks. I managed to get a little footage of the better buck. At first glance, he's no gawker, but after closer examination, I believe he has broken off both of his G2's. This could make him a dandy and certainly one to find next year. It's always nice to see a couple that have survived!

Nebraska Whitetail Deer Hunt 2011

     Between guiding late hunts in Colorado and Arizona, I was able to sneak away to Nebraska for three days for the opening weekend of rifle season. I went with Brody Henderson of Eagle, CO. We rolled in late the night prior to the opener. Having no time to scout, we studied our maps and picked out a likely looking area about a mile and a half from the nearest road. We hiked in an hour before daylight, found good vantages, and waited. Soon after daylight, the deer started moving, and we were seeing lots of deer. Unfortunately, we also were seeing lots of hunters.   It was a real pumpkin patch! Looking 360 degrees, I could see 14 hunters, some as close as 250 yards. By 8:30 am we decided it was time for a different scene. We knew we could find a spot with less pressure than that.
     We studied maps again at the truck and decided to try plan B and scout some good looking stuff from the road on the way over. We arrived around noon and headed up the nearest ridge to get a look and feel for the new area. No sooner did we top out, we spooked a nice buck and doe that were bedded at the top of a burned draw. We reminded ourselves to slow down. We hadn't seen another hunter yet, and the place had plenty of fresh sign. Five more minutes of still hunting led us to peek into another burned out bowl. I still can't say if we bumped these deer or if they were just up feeding in the middle of the day, but the bowl was holding five does and three bucks. They caught our movement and a couple white flags went up, luckily the whole group wasn't in on it and that bought us enough time to survey the deer.
The group started to crest the rim of the bowl and I was worried that I might be denied a shot because the deer would be skylighted. I picked the closest buck and, as I was getting my gun up, the buck did a 180 and thought he would just slip out the backside. That brought him off the skyline. I took a knee, aimed and fired. The buck stood motionless, trying to disappear. It was a clean miss. The buck just stood there, I believe this was his survival tactic. Unfortunately for him, it allowed me enough time to cycle the bolt, lean into the closest deadfall snag and steady my rifle. The second shot connected and he crumpled. Brody and I looked at each other in awe, not believing we had just waltzed into 8 deer that had not yet been pressured. He immediately took off to try and see where the rest of the group was going.
     Once Brody cleared the rim, I took off to see what I had. As I neared, the buck stood on his front legs. The shot had dropped him, but not killed him. I put one in his neck to finish the kill. I was packing my 300 WSM with 180gr. Accubonds that day. Some might say that's overkill for a Whitetail, but in this case it made the difference.  At a distance of about 150 yards, my first shot was a miss, the second shot, once I steadied, was a hit but nowhere close to the vitals. The spine shot that had dropped the buck, was closer to his rear quarter than his shoulder. I'm guessing an easy 18" from my point of aim. Had I been packing a lighter caliber, the hunt might not have ended that quickly. Although not dead, the .300 WSM had anchored him.
     I'm usually not one for rushed shots. I'd love to always lay over my pack and touch one off prone, but sometimes you just don't have the time. This was certainly a "flash" hunt. We were only hunting three days, opening morning had been a pumpkin convention, and we had just bumped a buck. I was feeling the pressure to shoot. I shoot a fair amount of rounds through my CZ American .22LR and know my offhand capabilities. 150 yards off the knee is certainly stretching it for me. In retrospect, I should have shown the animal a little more respect and found a better rest for that distance. Maybe I should have crept along a little slower so as not to be detected in the first place. I put some lead in the air that day and ended up killing a dandy buck. A little luck is always appreciated, but I'm reminded that the more I practice, the more I shoot, the more I hunt, the less luck will be needed. Had that buck slipped out somehow, I still would have learned a lesson in still hunting and the buck might have been around the next day to chase again.

AS HE LAY

Dragging this buck out, I stripped down to my KUIU 250 wt. merino and never got over heated.

Outerwear: Stormy Kromer cap, KUIU Guide Jacket, Sitka 90% pants, Lowa Ranger boots.
Baselayers and midlayers, including socks: all merino wool from quality manufacturers including Smartwool, KUIU, and Icebreaker.

At 18 1/2" inside, he's my widest whitetail to date. He grosses roughly 138".

I think the B&W photo shows how both the KUIU Vias camo and the Sitka Optifade break up my outline in this open, burned country.

Nosler Accubonds and my .300 WSM

I've shot elk with rounds as small as the .270 and as big as the .300 Weatherby. I know lots of folks that have killed elk with even smaller rounds and certainly plenty of bigger ones. Unfortunately, I can't afford to own a gun collection so I'm always trying to find the perfect elk round. I know this is a subject that will be debated until the end of time, but this is my current favorite. The .300 WSM. I've now owned two Winchester model 70's chambered in .300 WSM and both were tack drivers. The .300 WSM seems to be a near perfect combination of a lightweight action, a heavy bullet(if wanted), enough powder for long distance, and minimal punishment on the shoulder(My "long distance" is out to 500 yards). My bullet of choice on any elk is the Nosler Accubond. I'm a fan of heavier bullets for elk, so I was loading 200gr. Accubonds but switched to 180gr. to pick up a bit of speed. With 69gr. of IMR 7828, my 180's are going 3000 ft/s. To date, all the elk I have shot with an Accubond bullet have died quickly and the bullets were never been recovered as they have all been pass through shots. Here are the results from this year's hunts with my Winchester M70 in .300 WSM.

The Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather SS, chambered in .300 WSM, topped with a Leupold VX-3 4.5-14x40. So far, a great mountain hunting set up.

300 WSM with 180gr. Nosler Accubonds

Cow elk: Walking at 250 yards. 3 shots: one in the paunch, one in the shoulder, and one in the neck; in that order. All pass throughs. Cow went 50 yards downhill.

Bull elk: bedded at 80 yards. One shot in the forward part of the shoulder; pass through. Bull went 10 yards.

My cousin's bull: Feeding at 171 yards. One shot behind the shoulder, through both lungs; pass through. Bull went 40 yards.

NE Whitetail buck: Standing at 150 yards. 3 shots: one miss, one spine and one finishing shot in neck. Dropped in his tracks but required follow up.

As you can see the 180 grain Accubond performed well at distances as close as 80 yards and as far as 250 yards. When the bullet hit bone there was considerably more damage and larger exit wounds than on the meat only type hits. In any case, the bullet held its path and mass to create a wound channel all the way through. I'm a fan!

We would just like to say we were honored to be in the presence of a magnificent trophy like this. The buck has a 19 4/8 spread and 13 7/8 inches of abnormals for a total of 137 5/8 Gross He has 5 2/8 inches of symmetry deduction for a Unofficial Net of 132 3/8

Ryan Eustice's Monster Coues Buck

Friend of JayScottOutdoors.com, Ryan"Uncle Eusty" Eustice just harvested a Giant of a Coues!!! I remember going on Ryan's first coues hunt with my cousin Jimmy Vincent and friend Mike Tenney a long time ago. He has killed many nice coues over the years but has finally shot the buck of a lifetime. Darr Colburn and I have pounded over the maps with Ryan since he found out he drew. Cody Nelson and Cody Goff, other friends of JayScottOutdoors, really dialed Ryan in as to where to focus his attention. Ryan made his scouting and preparation pay off for sure. He definitely was due for a great buck and this one was well deserved for sure. The good Lord was shining down on Ryan today! Once the craziness settles down, I will have Ryan give the account and some pics of his fine trophy. Congrats to my friends Ryan Eustice, Mike Tenney, Jimmy Vincent, Cody Nelson and Cody Goff. CO 3rd season Cow and Bull Combo

Here is a short photo essay of my 3rd season elk hunts in central Colorado. Thanks to everyone that came to help carry meat out of the woods.

Day two, I muffed this same bunch of cows around 9am, followed them till about 2pm, had given up and was snacking, when the herd made a mistake and tried to cross the open bowl behind me.

The Outdoorsmans Pack carrying my daily gear, my rifle, two deboned shoulders, backstraps and tenderloins. I drug the hams as far as I could, then stashed them in a fir tree and came back the next day.

Bloodied in battle, a heavy pack, and a long walk home in fresh snow. It's good to be an elk hunter.

When the shooting was over I could only find 2 of the 3 cartridges fired. The next day, packing out the hams, I came across the picture above. I'm guessing a squirrel uncovered it and tried to take it up the tree but couldn't get a grip, so I got my brass.

My first successful "following his tracks to his bed" type of hunt.

The whole crew showed up to pack, even Baby Aina!

I went scouting for two days and got some good footage of this ram that I nicknamed "Mr Little Heavy". His right horn was pretty beat up. It was a beautiful two days out in the desert.

     My friend Brody Henderson had an epic hunt helping his dad on a Colorado 3rd season mule deer. Here is what he had to say about the hunt:

     "My Dad's name is Bill and he was pretty much speechless after he shot this buck of a lifetime. He didn't really know what he had even after it was down. It wasn't until we got home and compared it to the 170 inch buck I shot last year that it sunk in. Bill is 70 years old but is in pretty good shape for an old timer and because he was able to hike a bit he was able to kill this buck. There are no roads or 4 wheeler trails into the parcel of public land we hunted so the deer had basically been left alone. This buck was killed in central Colorado in a very overlooked area of BLM land (we saw no other hunters in the area) that I've hunted before that requires a mild uphill hike of about three quarters of a mile from parking area to about 7500 feet elevation. This buck was killed on November 9th at 8:30 am during pre-rut/early rut and was killed in an area used by a large number of resident does and small bucks.
    I glassed him up the evening before while my Dad watched some does and a forkhorn pass close by us. He looked like a good 180 type buck when I glassed him in low evening light at maybe four hundred yards. Luckily, the big guy was still there the next morning near the same group of does. The next morning, we circled around and uphill of the does before first light and then slowly stalked in on them when we saw they weren't coming uphill. We almost got in too close and I didn't see the buck until we were about 70 yards away but there was a slight breeze in our face and the buck never knew we were there. He was feeding uphill of the does and Dad got down on his knees and on his sticks for the downhill quartering away shot. He used a Weatherby Mark V .308 with a 168 grain TSX that passed through his chest and then the right leg.

     He's a mainframe 4 x 4 with two nice stickers on right side and a small one near the base on left side, 25 inch inside main beam spread and 31 inch outside greatest spread with tons of mass that carried all the way through the frame. The mass is what made it such a cool buck. Rough Gross Score is 209 1/8. I actually think he was a year past his prime. He still had a huge body and thick fat on his back and hind quarters but the rack had a couple spots on the right and left sides that were probably stickers last year and incredibly I think he would have scored quite a bit better last year.I'd say he was at least 6 1/2 but probably a year or two older. My feeling is he was not a buck that used that area year round but came down out of the high country because of late October/ early November snow and the rut. It was a great hunt with Dad and even more fun than killing my bull a few days earlier."

Colburn and Scott Outfitters AZ Unit 23 Late Hunt with Rick Snellstrom

My eyeballs are sore from the glassing, I'm still picking cactus spines from my calves, and the AZ pinstripes will take another week to dissapear from my forearms, but I'm already thinking about next year's hunt. This year we experienced very warm temps for the late hunt which combined with the normal pressure made for a tough hunt. We still hammered away all seven days of the hunt looking for an AZ giant, passing on a few bulls in the 330's. On the last day of the hunt, the front edge of a winter storm came barging in and that got the bulls on their feet. The final morning we glassed up 14 bulls, which was as many as we had seen over the prior four days. We decided to send Rick after them and after four hours of stalking, an hour of sitting through a blizzard, and a couple of well placed shots we had a bull down. I'd like to thank Rick for being such a trooper, we guides love clients that can hike and start every day of the hunt with a positive attitude. It was a pleasure to lead you through some of AZ's worst manzanita and catclaw thickets!

I just got back from Desert Sheep hunting with my friends, Erik and Trent Swanson in Unit 44 B South in Southwestern Arizona. We had a great hunt and Erik harvested a ram that I nicknamed "Pinky". Erik made a great 406 yard shot across a small canyon with his custom built .300 Weatherby. His rifle was topped with a Swarovski Z5 5-25X52 L BT 4W reticle. We were able to capture hundreds of photos and lots of video of this ram prior to Erik putting him down. We were joined on the hunt by Erik's best friend Michael Sisk and Erik's stepfather Rob Gillette. Overall we had some very cold and windy days for Arizona standards but we managed to have a great time sheep hunting. I was able to capture the whole hunt on video and should have it posted soon. This was a great hunt with great people! Lots more to come soon. All of the fantastic photos above were taken by Trent Swanson. Our tape shows the ram being a little bigger than I thought it was. He should gross between 167-168. Video and more pics to come soon!

Erik Swanson's AZ Desert Sheep Hunt Part 1

I have the good pleasure of hunting with friends Erik and Trent Swanson in Unit 44B South this year. Erik had applied for 20 years and then his number was pulled and he is now in the game. We have already had a great time on this hunt and it hasnt even started yet. Here is the scoop on the unit. Since 2000 the average ram taken is 160 4/8. Here is the positive news, since 2005 there has been four rams out of seven that gross 169-170. The optimist that I am would say that the unit is probably trending towards the upside. The game and fish flew there survey in October and saw roughly 75 sheep. Only one class IV ram was seen. We have found that ram but he is not a high scorer but he is a horny devil for sure. Attached are the pics that compare the class IV that was flown to the ram we found in the exact location a few days later. Now another positive that we have going for us is that Erik is the only tag holder. Since 2008 there has only been one tag per year. I rarely give hunt updates because we usually have other hunters in the area but since Erik has the only tag. I will try and give some updates throughout the next 10 days or so. Should be a great time with two good friends!

We are 99.9% sure that this is the same Class IV ram that the Game and Fish took from the helicopter. Hopefully we can turn something bigger than this guy. Stay Tuned!

Colburn and Scott Outfitters Late Hunt Bull Down

Yesterday was openning morning of the late hunt. We had been scounting for about 5 days before the hunt started and had seen some nice bulls. I was hunting with David Combs and his wife Sona. Janis and his hunter Rick saw a couple of nice bulls the evening before the hunt started and gave us directions how to get there. David is 70 years young and is a very experienced hunter. David, Sona and I were waiting in the dark on the point where Janis and Rick told us to go. At first light I glassed up a bull bedded at 310 yards. After 20 minutes of trying to get a rest David connected on a great late hunt bull. The bull has seven points on his right side and had seven on his left but broke a couple of points during the rut. When cutting up the meat for the pack out we found a 3 blade Rage broadhead and 4 inches of arrow in the bulls left shoulder. It took Janis, Rick and I most of the day the get the bull packed out. Here are a few pictures. David and Sona where great to hunt and share stories with. I look forward to spending more time with them again someday. I hope am still hunting when I am 70.

He was living in a big standing cornfield along with another 200”+ giant. It took me 8 days to get it done."

Sounds like the record needs to be set straight. This bull was harvested by Justin and Brian Marshall's crew with Unlimited Outfitters. I have heard that Todd Brooks and I spooked the bull to Brian Marshall and crew and that it ran into their lap and they shot it out of self defense. Nothing could be further from the truth. The truth as I know it is that my hunter Todd Brooks were hunting in a completely different part of the unit on opening morning. I called my wife at lunchtime to tell her we were on our way back to camp and to have our lunch ready. She said that friend Cody Nelson had seen a big bull. Cody showed us that afternoon where he saw the bull. We moved in that afternoon and ended up spooking the bull. The next morning we went to where I thought the bull spooked to. We chased bulls but did not find the big one from the night before. On the way out we saw a Ranger parked. I commented that they must have had a good morning because it was around 11.30 and they still werent back to the rig. We did not see the bull that night but I got a text picture from Brian Marshall that night of a bull that looked just like the big one. The next morning to our surprise as we passed a camp. There was a large set of antlers in the back of a Ranger. I stopped at the camp and the lights were off. It was roughly 4:30 am. It turns out it was Brian and his crew. They had harvested a great bull fair and square.

FOR THE RECORD AND FOR ALL GOSSIPERS, if you weren't there then shut your mouth! The bull was harvested fair and square by Brian Marshall and Unlimited Outfitters. Brian actually has been watching that bull for several years. He has great video of that bull. Brian and I have known each other for many years and while we do not run together I consider him a friend. We have always had a good professional relationship and we will continue to do so. Brian and his crew know the country real well and have consistently helped their cleints harvested great trophies for many years.

Case closed in my book and hats off to Unlimited Outfitters and Brian Marshall for a great job. All other talk is just that TALK. And thats all I have to say about that. Good Day!

During the 2011 Arizona Strip13B hunt I had the great pleasure of hunting with with John Holbrook of Yuma Arizona. After 7 days of pounding the country we finally caught up with the buck we were after. John made a stellar 360 yard downhill shot in a tense situation to take this unreal buck. After a addition error was corrected on the score sheet the deer gross scores 239 6/8ths" with a 221 frame. His left G4 was only 4.4" and had he matched side to side he would have grossed right at 260" as a 5x5 with only one inch of eyeguard. He was aptly nicknamed "

Well here is the second giant that we killed on the Strip this year. He was dubbed "One Eye" cause..well...he only had one eye! We started the hunt looking for him and found him rutting a couple of does on the morning of day two after a short tracking job. One shot at 165 yards was all it took to harvest the great old deer. His heavy antlers grossed 230" on the button with about 3 inches broken off. 34 wide 9x8. A special thanks to our entire crew. The last time I saw him Dan Troy and I were about 80 yards and closing when another hunter shot him in the back hip. We never saw the bull again after that. Darr and I had a great time scouting and hunting with Donnie Young. We spent 25 days in the field and saw over 115 rams and three times as many ewes and lambs. Our hearts were set on harvesting a Boone and Crockett ram on this tag but I guess it was not meant to be. Donnie's ram should score between 166-168 but we have to wait on the drying period. We had figured the ram in the field to be 165-168 depending on where the exact circumference measurements fell. The ram is 9 years old. He has roughly 34 6/8 inch horns and 14 4/8 bases. His 3rd quarter measurements are dang near 10 inches which is uncommon for a Nelsoni. Even though he probably wont make Boone and Crockett All time book he should definitely make the awards book. To put it all in perspective since 1995 here are the size of rams that have been harvested on this same raffle tag, 1995-154, 96-156, 97-159 4/8, 98-157 2/8, 99-159 2/8, 2000-155 7/8, 01-163 4/8, 02-159 7/8, 03-123 4/8, 04-155 2/8, 05-?, 06-165 6/8, 07-162 5/8, 08-153, 09-160, 10-154. So according to the numbers Donnie's ram is the largest to be harvested in 16 years. Donnie's ram was the second biggest ram we saw during our scouting. I will post video of a ram that I saw early on but he seemed to have vanished. The bigger ram was just a touch bigger than Donnie's but definitely not monumental. We had lots of rutting activity during the whole time period so the rams were roaming all over. We saw or heard head butting almost every day.

We have had much help along the way since finding out we were going to be the fortunate ones who got to guide Donnie on his hunt of a lifetime. I sincerely apologize if I leave anyone out it is certainly not done on purpose. Thanks first to Mr. Donnie Young, the tag holder, for having faith in Colburn and Scott Outfitters. Darr and I were home a few days from the elk hunt and then headed to Northwestern Arizona to start scouting for the upcoming Desert Sheep Super Raffle sheep hunt with Mr. Donnie Young. We have seen close to 50 rams in a week and one pretty good ram. We get to hunt 9/10, 12, 13, 15, and 16's units. We have many photos and video to share but internet service is limited. Jason Sullivan was my early rifle hunter this year. Jason brought his good friend Chris along on the hunt. This was Jason's first elk hunt. Opening morning we glassed up some bulls and put them to bed. Jason and I set up in the afternoon close to where we had the best bull of the morning bedded. As soon as we started glassing we found the bull and his group of cows. We decided to not go after the bull because he was a little thin antlered. I was able to get some great footage of this bull. He has huge main beams! Another bull started to bugle and he ended pushing his cows to within 50 yards of us. We ended up seeing three bulls that evening. The next morning we found a bull Janis and I nick named Duster because Janis got some great video of the bull kicking up dust one evening. We watched the bull go up onto a mesa to bed and made a plan for the evening hunt. Jason and I set up in the bottom below the bull while Chris was up high glassing the mesa where the bull disappeared in the morning. Chris was able to find the bull just before dark and Jason and I closed the distance to 100 yards. Jason made the shot and had his first elk! Chris came off the point to us and we were joined by Janis and his hunter Dave for the late night pack out. Thanks for all the help guys. After getting home I realized that I had several trail camera pictures of Jason's bull. Jason's bull has 59 & 57 inch main beams.

The broadhead is going to be manufactured and marketed by Trophy Taker and should be in full production by January or so.

Dave's T. Early Rifle Elk Hunt with Colburn and Scott Outfitters

Dave Toyne was my Early Rifle client in Unit 10 for 2011. After getting to know each other a bit, it was decided that we were going to hunt for a 370"+ bull for the first five days as Dave already had a couple of trophies on his wall. We hunted hard, but with the rut being hit and miss and only pockets of elk actually acting rutty, finding one of the big boys proved difficult. As the week wore on, bigger bulls were spotted, but unfortunately most of them were already broken. With only a day and half to go, Dave decided he'd rather shoot a smaller bull than go home empty handed. We had a spot where the bugling had been good, and slipped in under the cover of darkness on the last morning. The bulls were screaming, we were set up to watch the parade go by, but as the second half of the herd was nearing, the wind swirled and our position was revealed. The elk took off and we took off after them. It was a solid twenty minutes of hot-footing, but we caught up just as they were about to go over another ridge. I glassed Dave's bull, thought him to be a great last day shooter, and told Dave to get into shooting position. With only one small shooting lane left before the bull would dissapear we were cutting it thin. Dave came through with pounding heart rate and all. He made a 312yd shot from a seated position in a 4th and Goal type scenario. After a couple finishing shots the bull was down. Congratulations Dave! My early rifle hunter Jason Sullivan brought a friend with him to help out on his hunt. I sent him to a point one morning to glass and on his way back to the truck he found the bones and skull of this giant bull. There was no hair on the carcass and nothing to indicate how the bull died. Chris's wife called the Arizona Game & Fish to see if her husband could pack the antlers out and bring them home. Game & Fish said he could and so he packed them out after taking pictures of the bones and kill site. Chris was also stopped by a Game & Fish officer on his way back to camp and he congratulated Chris on his great find and told him he did not have a problem with Chris taking the antlers because there was no hair on the skull or bones. Clay Goldman of Mogollon Taxidermy scored the bull at 404 gross non typical and 398 net non typical. The bull has a 380s typical main frame with 20 inches of abnormal points. The bull has short main beams (51 & 52 inches) but is really heavy and has great 3rds, 4ths and 5ths.

Dan Troy's Archery Bull with Colburn and Scott Outfitters

I just got home from 29 days of elk hunting. Dan Troy was my archery hunter. When I first met Dan in camp he was all smiles and I knew we were going to have a great hunt. We chased a bull I was calling G5 for the first 5 days of the hunt until another hunter shot hip in the back hip. We never saw the bull again (pics and video to come soon of this giant bull). While driving back to camp on day 8 we decided to go hunt a couple of other bulls we had seen on a regular basis. Janis glassed the bulls up that evening and the hunt was on. Two bulls were fighting and we were able to slip into 100 yards. We were out of cover when all the sudden the two bulls turned and came straight at us. The two bulls paralleled each other until they got to 25 yards. The biggest bull stopped to rake a tree at 25 yards and Dan made a perfect shot. The bull did not know what hit him and he piled up after 100 yards. We got to the bull just as the sun was going down. Dan's Bull grosses 376 & 4/8 and nets 369. Janis was able to get the whole thing on video through his spotting scope. I had a great time hunting with Dan and look forward to a long friendship and sharing a hunting camp together again someday. Todd Brooks Archery AZ Bull

Here are the pics of Todd Brook's Arizona archery bull with Colburn and Scott Outfitters. He unofficially grosses 377 3/8 and nets 366 2/8. Todd arrowed this bull at 20 yards then the bull stood by and let him get another arrow in him at 42 yards. He expired very quickly from the time he was first shot. We had a great fun hunt. I made a big mistake on the opening evening of the hunt on a 6X6 bull that was really big. I got impatient and bumped the giant that Brian Marshall with Unlimited Outfitters and his hunter were able to harvest. Brian tells me the bull grosses 412. Congrats to those guys! Todd and I felt priviledge to see the big clean typical 6X6. Cody Nelson came up to glass for us a and spotted him on opening morning.

The hunt has started and the rut is moving a little slow as expected. I have been using a awesome bino chest pack from Alaskan Guide Creations that I got from the Outdoorsmans in Phoenix. I absolutely love it! I cant believe I have waited so long to get one. The KUIU gear is working great as well. The KUIU icon backpack is getting a good workout. Dave Melde, longtime friend, has arrowed a giant AZ deer! Dave left me a message: 209 typical gross frame, 215 gross Non typical, 197 net typical. 26 inches inside, 21" G2's. That is all I know for now! Big congrats go out to Dave! He is a mule deer fanatic and the excitement in his voice on the message was awesome! Cant wait to see more pics and more details!

Coues Deer Scouting

I woke up at 3am yesterday to lightning and clouds in the sky. I decided to go despite the weather and I was glad I did. After an almost 2 hour quad ride I got to the first point I wanted to glass from. I glassed for about 30 minutes and was only able to turn up one doe. The wind picked up so I decided to move to a different spot. I got to the next point and the wind had stopped. I immediately glassed up a couple of small bucks. Then around 8:30 I glassed up a nice buck all by himself. He has 5 points on his left and 3 on his right. He has nice main beams and looked to be around 14 inches wide. After watching the buck until he bedded I hiked back to the quad for the long ride back to my truck. I was about half way back to my truck when I looked up and saw a truck off the road. I got out my binoculars and could tell that the truck had rolled off the road. I drove up the road to where the truck was and could not believe what I saw. The truck was a newer Ford F350 and had rolled off the road. I quickly checked the truck for people or blood and saw neither. I hiked up the hill where the truck had rolled down and there was stuff everywhere. Fluids were leaking out of the truck and it smelled like it had just happened. I snapped a couple of pics before I headed back down the road. I drove about 1/4 mile before I ran into a guy and his son along with their dog. They were still shaking as they told me what had just happened. The dad had let his son and dog out and then drove down the road a little ways. He got out of the truck and the truck started rolling down the road before it turned and plunged down a steep hill and started to roll. I was relieved that everyone was ok. The guy said that the truck had been popping out of 4WD all morning and he thinks it popped out of gear when he stopped. We all loaded onto my quad and slowly road the 10 miles back to my truck. I wish I had a picture of the three people and a dog on my quad! We made it back to the truck and I drove them home. I finally made it home around 2pm. What wild day.

Youth Outdoors Unlimited Hunter Education Class

I took the family to a Hunter Education Class this weekend put on by Youth Outdoors Unlimited Inc. The class was two days in the cool pines near Happy Jack, AZ. My oldest son Parker and my wife Odette were signed up for the course. My youngest son Paul and I participated but did not take the test. We had a great time camping with friends and taking the class. Parker and Odette did very well and received their hunter education cards and bonus point. The guys at Youth Outdoors Unlimited Inc. put on a great camp and I highly recommend this class for kids who need to go through hunter education. Youth Outdoors Unlimited Inc. does lots of juniors hunting camps. They rely on donations to keep these camps going. Lindsay's Colorado River Rainbow

It was just another sunny day at the office until Lindsay's 6wt. Winston doubled over. We actually doubled up when this fish hit, but luckily the other rainbow popped off. After a few passes near the boat, we realized what was on our line and the boat got awfully quiet. After a 10min fight, this giant was showing some fatigue and the whole boat worked as a team to land it. Lindsay's husband Jim netted it and as he lifted the fish out of the water my net broke from the weight. Thus the fish was named the "Netcracker". This fish could not have been caught by a more enthusiastic, well minded, and deserving angler. Even on days when the fish don't bite, Lindsay never says boo! We taped the fish at 27", but I think we could've stretched another inch out of it. Congratulations again Lindsay on the fish of a lifetime.

2011 Bow Hunter Happening

I took my boys Parker and Paul up to the Bow Hunter Happening last weekend. The event took place at Mormon Lake this year. Mormon Lake was a great place for the shoot. We got lots of rain on Saturday and some more on Sunday. I was really impressed with the number of families shooting together. I saw lots of old friends and it was really good catching up with everyone. Special Thanks to the Arizona Bow Hunters Association and all its volunteers for putting on such a great event.

I had a free morning so I decided to brave the heat and go look for some bucks. I managed to glass up a few before the heat got to bad. When I got back to the truck the temperature was already 104 degrees! Enjoy the video.

Vail Half Marathon

Jeanne and I worked hard getting to the gondola to go cheer Janis on in the Vail Half Marathon. Janis managed to better his time from last year by 5 minutes at 2:37:59. This is a grueling mountain race that is 14.1 miles and has 4019 elevation gain with an average of 7% grade. Jeanne and I walked a mile with a elevation gain of 12 feet and then managed to get on the Gondola without hurting ourselves. Meanwhile Janis surged ahead toward the finish. Janis trains with the WA Hydrate and Recover, Energy and Focus and the energy gels. Janis said, "I used the gels at the half way point and it pushed me forward." Congrats Janis on finishing this grueling race and improving your time!

We fished the lower Eagle and the flow was at 2390 cfs. We landed many nice fish and had a ball of a time on the river.

Eagle River Trip Report 7.15.11

We had a good day fishing the Eagle River with guide Janis Putelis. the water was still high at 3000 cfs. You can see from the pics that the water is still big but retreating daily. The holes and seams are starting to open up by the day. Save your strength emailing me about my sweet fishing hat. The last picture shows what Janis has to put up with on a daily basis with me. I can tangle a fly line like no one else I have ever seen!

I was up around Flagstaff last weekend and the monsoon rains have definitely started. We got some rain all three days we were there. The forest looked very green. Units 7, 9 and 10 all looked like they were getting some good rain. Hopefully the rains continue.
