Flyfish the Eagle River

The flow on the Eagle today started at 1710cfs so we decided to try it. Our Master Guide, Janis Putelis of Alpine River Outfitters, had some more custom strike indicators for us that were painted like red and white bobbers like old times. The fishing was good and the laughs were plentiful. I still can't understand how much of a tangling twosome Jeanne and I can be sometimes. Well, OK maybe its just me. Watch the videos for some action and some tangler angler action that had us rolling with laughter. We landed several 18+ inch fish today and Jeanne even caught one on a dry. I stuck to lots of weight and got down and dirty which is my preference. Enjoy

Huge Flows!

As you can see by the photo, we are waiting for the water to subside. The runoff was thought to be over here in Colorado but the rivers had something else to say about it. The Eagle, Gore Creek and the Roaring Fork decided to suspend our fishing trip for awhile. Stay tuned for more fishing updates to come soon.

Eagle River Adventure

We had a fun day with our Master Guide Janis Putelis of Alpine River Outfitters and lots of fish were drug to the boat. Janis got to undo a major tangled that I created with my line on Jeanne's rod. One might ask, "How is that even possible?" I guess anything is possible with the Scott twosome. I received a great gift from Janis, it was a white thingamabobber that he had customized for me to look just like the old time bait bobbers. Well I fished it with pride! I have been known to nymph fish right thru a green drake hatch so weight and bobbers fit my style just fine. BTW, no emails about my funny looking hat and white sunscreen!!

Fishing Headquarters 2009

We have arrived in the Vail Valley and the view from our condo can be seen in this video. The moving water of Gore Creek is something Jeanne and I like very much! We are looking forward to fishing with the two master guides, Janis Putelis of the Eagle Valley and Mike Shook of the Roaring Fork Valley. Water is still high but it is close to being game on!

Handheld GPS

In my opinion, one of the most important, if not the most important piece of equipment that I carry with me at all times while in the field is a mapping GPS unit. I started with the Garmin 38, then 45, then a 12xl, then E MAP, then the 60cs. I have the topo program loaded into my last two units and I use it all of the time. I cannot recommend a piece of gear more than a mapping GPS unit. Some will say that they have no need for the mapping GPS and they do just fine with the standard gps. I would only shake my head at those people and realize that they are missing out big time! BTW, I still carry a compass but use the mapping GPS all the time. You can locate springs, waterholes, glassing points, old trails, new trails, etc. You can be on the fly and not have to crack the topo maps out. You can just search nearest points of interest. That is not possible with a regular non mapping GPS. At 7.5 oz it is a necessity! If someone has some experience with the latest and greatest mapping gps shoot me an email and tell me about your experience.

Fly Fishing Season begins

All I can say is Stoneflies, Stoneflies and more Stoneflies!! No adults were seen flying around because of the recent cold weather but as soon as it warms look out. I fished for a couple of days at one of my favorite little rivers in Colorado and had a great time. The water was still real high but was fairly clear. All of the fish photos are different fish but it appears that they are all the same one! Got to love it!!! Flies of the day were black stones, golden stones and 20 inchers.

Official Score

My Coues deer from this year was officially scored by Boone and Crockett scorer Clay Goldman. The buck gross scores 133 5/8 inches and nets 130 5/8 inches Non Typical. It has a typical frame of 114 7/8 with 18 6/8 inches of extras. It has 3 inches of symmetry deductions. I can't wait for the upcoming season to get back after those awesome Coues Deer. Thanks again to Randy and Zach for their help and the Good Lord for creating the fire in my belly to hunt hard.
